The chemical constituents in EtOAc extract of the Ethiopian traditional medicinal plantrn‘Dingetegnaâ€, Taverniera abyssinica, were reinvestigated and the claimed antispasmodic activityrnof them were examined. The chemical constituents were isolated and purified by variousrnchromatographic methods and their structures were elucidated mainly by NMR. The tworncompounds isolated were identified as 3-hydroxy-9-methoxypterocarpan, a known compoundrncalled medicarpin and 3,4-dihydroxypterocarpan (4-hydroxymedicarpin). Both compoundsrnantagonized the histamine induced contraction of guinea pig ileum. Medicarpin was more activernthan its natural derivative 4-hydroxymedicarpin.
