Seven novel thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine-based donor-acceptor polymers, namely, poly[2,3-bis(3-(dodecyloxy)phenyl)thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine-5,7-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl](52, 52’), poly[2,3-bis(3-(decyloxy)phenyl)thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine-5,7-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl] (53), poly[2,3-bis-(2,3-bis(3-(octyloxy)phenyl)thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine-5,7-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl] (54, 54’) and poly[2,3-bis(3-(hexyloxy)phenyl)thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine-5,7-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl] (55, 55’) were synthesized and characterized. The polymers were prepared by employing the Stille cross coupling polymerization and the direct heteroarylation polymerization techniques. For the Stille cross coupling polymerization reactions, the monomers used were dibromo derivatives of substituted thieno[3,4-b]pyrazines and 2,5-bis(tributylstannyl)thiophene. On the other hand, the monomers used for the direct heteroarylation polymerization reactions were non-brominated thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine derivatives and 2,5-dibromothiophene. Monomers and intermediate compounds were characterized by using NMR (1H and 13C), UV-Vis-NIR and IR spectroscopy. The structural, electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers were investigated by using 1HNMR, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and square-wave voltammetry (SWV).
