THE CAUSES OF POOR PERFORMANCE IN COOPERATIVE BUSINESS ENTERPRISE

(A CASE STUDY OF NWANGELE L.G.A IMO STATE)

ABSTRACT

This project is written to be useful to all who and interested in cooperative organization and the general public. This is to reveal the process of poor performance of cooperative enterprise in Imo State. In this project, on finds out the means of which the Imo cooperative enterprise will stop the poor performances on thrift and credit marketing and farms cooperative societies in my state.

Chapter one was all about introduction, background of the study etc. Chapter two was all about review of related literature.

In chapter three was all about research design and methodology. The method use in collecting data for using simple percentage rating.

Chapter four was all about representation and analysis of data while chapter five was summary, conclusion and recommendations.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0  INTRODUCTION

The existence of co-operative society is not-like the existence of other societies or parties. This is because co-operative business enterprise performs different function according to the co-operative law’s articles of association and their memorandum. This aspect stipulates the extent to which an organization or business entity can operate.

Berko (1987) said that co-operative business enterprise is the provide of the cooperative effect in cooperative societies, individuals especially in developing countries join cooperative not necessarily due to ideological indication but basically the enhance the economic wellbeing of one self.

Okareaiffia (2007) said that cooperative enterprise is a jointly owned long term/permanent business enterprise as an instrument for producing goods and services for member’s welfare. The main of cooperative enterprise is not meeting the needs to members at the least possible cost. The very ideal of cooperative, suggests that members work together voluntary. No body is forced to join or leave the organisation member of cooperative enterprise share their risk, duties, responsibilities right and benefits etc together by collective efforts.  

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Imo co-operative federation is the mother of all co-operative in the state, whether primarily, secondary or tertiary. As a result of the transfer of power the promotion of cooperative has continued to be deliberately encourage as an internal part of government development programmes partly a means of raising the standard of living of the masses through a democratically organized and managed enterprise.

Production is a process by which raw materials are transformed into a different product be it finished goods. Cobi 2004) economic of cooperative production may be seen as transformation of raw material into finished goods and distribution of good and service in other to satisfy human wants. Co-operative enterprise has so many things that can cause poor performance towards increase in production cooperative enterprise in Nwangele local government of Imo state was incorporated request established with the aim of increasing the standard of living of people in the community.

Nwangele is a local government area of Imo state. Its headquater are in the town of amaigdo.  It has an area of 63 square km & a population of 128, 472 as of the 2006 census. The postal code of the area                                                           is 471.

Nwangele local government is one of the local government areas created on December 4th 1996, and presently has 10 great towns and eleven INEC words. It is pertinent to note that this local government area has produced prominent world leaders form the 18th century till data. A few names suffice king Jaja of Opobo, known for his international trade and commerce and particularly his opposition to foreign imposition to cultural values, Dick tiger who was engraved in the role of honor and America hall of frame. Also chief Wanter Ofonagoro former D/G news Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Chairman NTA, and former minister of information and culture, are all sons of Nwangele local government area.

1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Due to the down turn in the economies situation and the liabilities to organization unite themselves, cooperative organization  or enterprises it has become unemployed and has not improved their structural hence the law contributions has not been better to the useful to themselves and the societies at large, the individuals cooperative members need to be safe employed.

1.3  OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

i)     To determine the contribution of co-operative in development of the study.

ii)    To determine the socio-economic characteristic of the

       respondents.

1.4  RESEARCH QUESTION

During the researchers work and subject matters, the researcher come up with some which the researcher feels will help to analyze and upgrade the subject matter.

They are:

i)            How have the cooperative societies help to improved standard of living of people in the community.

ii)          What are the characteristics of cooperative societies in the society.

1.5  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

During this research work, the researcher believes that this research work will be if great importance and encouragement to cooperative enterprise.

Also this work will enable the government to implement strategies in order to reduce cause of poor performance of cooperative enterprise, hence to improve the welfare of the society, when the cause of poor performance, there will be a positive reverse, hence upitting the image of the organization.

1.6  SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The research project causes of pour performance of cooperative enterprise towards increase in production are focused on a case study of Nwangele local government of Imo state.

In an attempt to produce this work the researcher face several handicaps, which include inadequacy of data, non-cooperative attitude of some officials visited resulting in their failure to give some vital information about their enterprise.

Finally, due to insufficient fund, moving to the specially sampled co-operative societies and other researcher canter within our courage couldn’t be possible due to transport fares and financial problem.

1.7  LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

In an attempt to produce the work, the researcher face several handicaps which include inadequacy of data, non-cooperative attitude of some official visited resulting in their to give some vital information about their societies.

1.8  DEFINITION OF TERMS

Cooperative Society: According to the international labour organization (110) co-operative society is an association of persons who have voluntarily joined together to achieve common and through the formation of a democratically controlled organization, making equitable contribution to the capital required and accepting a fair share of the risks and benefits of the undertaking in which members actively participate.

Cooperative Enterprise: A co-operative enterprise is an association of persons with identical have socio-economic problems. Who voluntarily come together, pooling their resource joint enterprise which is democratically managed, sharing the result equitable.

Production: According to economic of co-operative (2008) production can be defined as a transformation of raw materials into output and distribution and provision of goods and services in other to satisfy human wants.

Co-operative Business Enterprise: A jointly owned long term/permanent business enterprise an instrument for producing goods and services for the members welfare.
