The intensity and frequency of earthquake are getting higher and higher during these fewrnyears. After different failure observed the importance of enhancing the ductility capacityrnbecame essential. The enhancement of strength and ductility in column requiresrnconfinement of concrete by transverse reinforcement or other mechanism. In this study, rnan experimental investigation was conducted to examine the effect of confinement inrnconcrete columns subjected to axial loading. The experimental program include 33 smallrnscale concrete column with 3 type of different geometric arrangement of transverse tiern(cross tie, normal and overlapping) of square column and three different number of layerrnof square and circular column. For each experiment, stress–strain relationship wasrnobtained and compared with models proposed earlier.rnThe test result indicate that the strength of column confined by cross tie, over lappingrnthree layers square and circular specimens confined by wire mesh shows enhancement inrnstrength very significantly. Significant enhancement in peak strain and ductility wasrnobserved in specimens confined by wire mesh and cross tie configuration especiallyrnspecimen having circular cross section confined by three layer wire mesh. Circular andrncross tie type of confinement preserve the strength in the descending region of the stressstrainrncurve and prevent the column from sudden failure after peak load. From allrnspecimens the test result indicates that the cross ties configuration give higher strengthrnand ductility.rnFrom this research due to their higher strength and ductility, in seismic region it isrnrecommended to use that the cross tie configuration and wire mesh with number of layerrnis more than two. However, due to size and capacity limitation of the machine stressstrainrncharacteristics of experiment results in comparison with of the existingrnconfinement model show considerable deviation in the post strength zones. A betterrnachievement can be obtained by considering actual size of specimens.
