The main cause of the economic losses incurred forrnpavements built on swelling subgrade is the lack ofrnappropriate selection of the design and constructionrnmethod adopted to alleviate the swelling phenomena. Thernextent of the problem depends mainly on the degree ofrnexpansiveness of the soil and the corresponding climaticrnconditions. Current situation Ethiopia shows that randomrnselection of design & construction methods is widelyrnpracticed despite the various soil and climaticrncondition. Most of the practices aim at undefined use ofrnthe design and construction method that results inrnuneconomical and unsafe pavement design. Therneffectiveness of the methods depends also on thernselection of the design depth, a design depth that suitsrnthe technical and economical conditions.rnChapter two consists the review of the performance andrnsuitability of the various design and construction methodrnadopted in most part of the world including Currentrnpractices in this country.rnIn Chapter three, an attempt has been put to see thernconsideration of potential expansiveness and assessmentrnof the various prediction methods of heave and swellingrnpressure for the existing experimental values.
