The rapid advances in processor, memory, and radio technology have enabled the developmentrnof distributed networks of sensor nodes capable of sensing and communicating using wirelessrnmedia. This enables to develop novel applications that change the way we interact with the worldrnaround us.rnIn this thesis, we aim to develop a wireless sensor network application for dam safety monitoringrnapplication where the sensor network encompasses heterogeneous types of sensors distributed inrndifferent portion of a dam to gather data about the integrity of the dam. The sensor nodes arernorganized in multi-hop cluster based tree to sample the different physical parameters of the damrnand route the reading to a central place for data management and visualization purpose. We havernimplemented a dam safety monitoring application and its application specific routing protocol onrntop of TinyOS operating system using nesC programming. We have also implemented datarnmanagement and visualization methods to present the data to the user in a user-friendly mannerrnand providing exact detail. For such purpose the following tools are developed: LiveWatchrnwhich is a Java application for data logging, a web application to visualize the information on thernweb, and SMS module for alarm notification. The application allows real-time collection andrnprocessing of sensor data and presenting to the user through an appropriate interface.rnWe have evaluated the performance of our application through simulation using TOSSIMrnsimulator on MicaZ sensor nodes. Finally, we present some numerical results that demonstraternthe feasibility of our application and routing protocol.
