This study examined the implementation of the School ImprovementrnProgramme (SIP) in Addis Ababa City Administration and identified thernachievements) challenges and prospects of the programme. MultistagernStratified Random Sampling Technique was used to select 264 primaryrnand secondary school students) 234 primary and secondary schoolrnteachers from 24 schools in eight sub cities of Addis Ababa cityrnAdministration. Seventy experts at the kebelle and sub-city education andrntraining offices) city administration education office) and federal ministryrnof education levels also took part in the study as respondents. A blend ofrnboth quantitative and qualitative approaches to research has been used tornconduct the study. About 99% of the distributed questionnaires werernretumed and data were analysed using SPSS. Although further efforts arernneeded to bring significant improvement) the study has shown thatrnencouraging achievements have been made at the school level) withrnrespect to the leaming and teaching as well as the Leadership andrnManagement Domains. However) achievements in School Environmentrnand Community Involvement Domains were found very low. Furthermore)rnlack of school facility) insufficient budget) lack of the necessary awarenessrnand practical involvement of the community) lack of trained teachers forrnspecial needs education) and lack of the necessary awareness andrnpractical involvement of teachers were identified as some of the majorrnchallenges in implementing SIP. At present it was found that most of thernschools covered by this study are at the Implementing/Functioning level ofrnthe School Improvement Programme) indicating that they have to workrnhard to rise to the embedded level. The study has also disclosed that thernschool improvement programme will have significant prospects in terms ofrnenhancing the leaming and teaching process) in bringing about a healthyrnand safe education environment) and in creating a strong partnershiprnbetween the community/parents and the school; among others.
