The purpose of this study was to assess to what extent lecture and/or discussion method of teaching isrnused in AAU. Lecture and discussion method of teaching are used as indicators of direct and indirectrninstructional strategies respectively. The study also examined the factors that most influence the selectionrnand utilization of instructional methods. Moreover, the influence of level of qualification, academic rank,rnand pedagogical knowledge of instructors in the process of instructional method selection and utilizationrnwas also surveyed.rnTo effectuate this, descriptive survey was employed. A sample of 97 male and 19 female instructors ofrnAAU in the SSC, ILS, FOE, FOL, FBE, and SISA was randomly selected. And 20 available classroomsrnwith minimum number of forty and above were observed. In addition to observing the teaching-learningrnprocess in twenty selected classrooms with the help of checklist, a questionnaire constructed in terms ofrnopen and close-ended items, rating and Likert scale were employed in the process of data gathering.rnThe data gathered via questionnaire and observation checklist were analyzed using the simple percentile,rnweight mean rank, and chi-square statistics. The analysis revealed that lecture and discussion are amongrnthe widely used instructional methods in the SSC, ILS, FOE, FOL, FBE, and SISA of AAU. Lecture inrnisolation, and lecture in combination with other methods of teaching were frequently used in comparisonrnwith lecture and discussion together, discussion in isolation, and discussion with other method ofrnteaching. Besides, lecture and discussion together, lecture together with other method of teaching, andrndiscussion with other method of teaching was used in comparable manner. On top of this, instructors dornnot perceive level of qualification as influential factor in the process of instructional method selection andrnutilization, though the statistical analysis indicated the other way. Academic rank was perceived as arncontributing factor in the process of instructional method selection and utilization. Conversely, however,rnthe statistical analysis didn't tell so. The pedagogical exposure of instructors found to be an influentialrnfactor in the process of instructional method selection and utilization; however, the majority of AAUrninstructors in the above specified disciplines except FOE have no pedagogical Knowledge either via preorrnin-service training
