The main purpose of this study was to examine the successes and challenges ofrnteaching grade nine English through satellite TV in three government schools in AddisrnAbaba namely, Wondirad, Kokebe Tsibah and Menelik II Secondary Schools.rnTo achieve the above purpose, descriptive survey method 'as employed. For thisrnpurpose, 285 grade nine students, 28 grade nine English teachers and 6 directors werernselected from the three high schools. The three high schools were selected purposefullyrnand the students were selected randomly. All available grade nine English teachers andrndirectors were included in the study.rnThe instruments used to collect data were questionnaire, observation andrninterview. The obtained data were analyzed by using percentages and mean values. Thernqualitative data obtained from open- ended questions and interviews were reported' asrngiven by respondents.rnThe study revealed that the satellite TV tried to integrate the four language skillsrnand syllabus (textbook). Moreover, the satellite TV used visual aids familiar to grade ninernstudents. To the contrary, students and classroom teachers didn't participate in thernteaching-Ieaming processrn.Moreover, students of grade nine had negative attitudesrntowards grade nine English satellite TV.rnThe study further revealed that grade nine English teachers didn't get anyrnservice utilization training. Hence, they carried out their roles minimally. The findingsrnalso showed that lack of English language from students, lack of enough time given byrnsatellite TV due to large volume of grade nine English textbook, large number ofrnstudents, lack of discipline from students and lack of curricular materials made thernimplementation of grade nine English very low.rnFinally, on the basis of the findings, it was recommended that teachers should getrnservice training on utilization of satellite TV by using seminars, workshops etc.rnStudents should practise communicative language starting from elementary schools. Thernsatellite TV teacher should consider the English language problemsrnof grade ninernstudents. Concerned bodies like EMA, MOE and ICDR should be involved in minimizingrnas well as in solving the problem areas to bring about effective teaching-learning process
