The main purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions ofrnteach rs and students about good citizenship, the role of Civic and EthicalrnEducation and school practices in provision of Civic and Ethical Education inrnfour high schools of South West Shoa Zone.rn--.h. To accomplish this purpose the study employed quantitative andrnqualitative survey research methods. With this respect, teache. rs in the field ofrnsocial science, school principals, department heads, students and documentsrnwere used as source of data in the study.rnThe data gathering instruments included questionnaire and inteJViews.rnFew documents were also contacted. Data obtained through ques!i..0nnaire werernquantitatively described and interpreted in the light of available literature whilerninformation obtained through interview; OpInIOn and observation werernqualitatively described to support quantitative data.rnResults of the study indicated that teachers and students perceIve goodrncitizenship from social point of views. knowledge of ones own governmentrnstructure and the functions of its institutions, and political participation arernbehaviors perceived by teachers and students as less important characteristicsrnthat characterize good citizenship. Moreover, it was found out that thoughrnteachers admitted that activities in the classrooms and out of school practicesrnhelp to prepare students for citizenship role in their actual practice, therntraditional teaching approaches used in schools didn't allow students many ofrnthe practices needed to develop good citizenship. Furthermore, lack of attentionrnfor co-curricular activities, lack of coordinating learning activities throughrnproject, weak relationship between school and different stakeholders found tornbe factors negatively influencing the provision of improved Civic and EthicalrnEducation and students' civic competence
