The purpose of this study was to understand the factors that affectrngrades 9 and 10 students' motivation to learn spoken English in somernselected secondary schools of East Shoa Zone. The study explored thernexperiences) attitudes) and perceptions of the participants throughrninterview) classroom observation) achievement tests) self reportrnquestionnaire) group discussion and document analysis) such as schoolrnmarks. On the bases of this) the study investigated the factors that affectrnmotivation to learn spoken English.rnThe correlation between motivation) and English language achievementrnat both target grades was analyzed by the method of transcription)rnr description and word expression.rnThe findings of the study indeed have indicated that factors such asrnparents' involvement) teacher character) peers' behavior and curriculumrnwere found to impose considerable impacts on students' motivation tornlearn spoken English. Socio cultural situation) classroom condition andrnsupplementary materials also were considered as influencing factors.rnBased on these findings) conclusions are reached and implications of thernfindings are indicated and forwarded.rnIn sum) the findings revealed that the level of students' motivation tornlearn spoken English is low) the factors that affect students' motivationrnto learn spoken English are parental involvement) teacher situation) thernenvironment) socio cultural situation and curriculum while the correlationrnbetween student's motivation and their achievement of English is alsornfound to be positive
