Background- Trauma is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world. Maxillofacial rninjuries cause fractures and disfigurement of different parts of the face and oral cavity. Fractures to thisrnregion can result in serious dysfunctions of sight, smell, breathing; eating and talking which impactrnnegatively on the victim’s quality of life. Moreover, owing to high premium placed on facial appearancernin many societies esthetic disturbance could results in adverse psychological consequence. rnObjective-To assess the etiologies and patterns of maxillofacial fractures in patients treated atrnAddisAbeba university oral and maxillofacial surgery affiliate hospitals (Yekatit 12 Hospital MedicalrnCollege and St. Peters specialized Hospital) in a period of 3 years from January 2017to December 2019.rnMethods: A retrospective descriptive study design was used. Medical registration retrieving of patientsrnwith maxillofacial fractures visited the Y-12 Hospital Medical College and St. Peter Specialized Hospitalrnfrom 2017 to 2019 was done. During data collection, sociodemographic data, etiology of trauma,rnpattern of fracture, and associated injuries wererecorded using predesigned data collection templaternand analyzed usingEPI INFO 7 computer software. rnResults: During 3-years period, 2017to 2019, 370 patients withmaxillofacial fractures visited the Yekatit12(Y-12)HospitalrnMedicalrnCollegernandrnSt.rnPeterrnSpecializedrnHospital.rnThernagernrangernofrnpatientsrnwasrnrnfrom3–70years.rnThernmeanrnagernofpatientsrnwasrn28.6withrnstandardrndeviationrnofrn11.47.rnMajorityrnofrnthernrnstudyrnparticipantsrnwerernwithinrnthernagerngrouprnofrn21–30rnyears.rnEightyrnonernpercentrnofrnthernparticipantsrnrnwerernmalernwithrnarnmalerntornfemalernratiornofrn4.9:1.rnInterpersonalrnviolencern(44.86%)rnandrnRoadrntrafficrnrnaccidentrn(29.73%)rnwerethernleadingrncauses.rnMandiblesrnwerernthernmostrncommonrnfracturedrnbone.rnTherernrnwasrnanrnassociatedrninjuryrninrn59(15.94%)rnpatientsrnincludingrnheadrnandrnneckrnarea,rnthoracic,rnabdominalrnandrnrnextremities.rnrnrnConclusion:rnThernstudyrnconcludedrnthatrnInterpersonalrnviolencernwasrnthernmajorrncausernofrnmaxillofacialrnrntrauma,rnwhilernmandiblernisrnthernmostlyrnfracturedrnbone.
