The study area is located in the South Western sector of Ethiopia. In the Southern Nations,rnNationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR), at (latitude N 6° 18' 06" longitude E 36° 03' 19").rnIt is about 905 km far from Addis Ababa and about 120 km from Jinka town, the weir site underrnlaid by feilsic volcanic rocks and quaternary sediments.rnThe feasibility and detail study of the Kuraz weir site ended in 2012/13.exploratory drillingrnborehole and test pits excavation work along the weir axis has been carried out. However, rnreview of geotechnical reports produced for the design and construction of the weir indicates thatrnthere are some remaining critical geotechnical information gaps. This study was thus undertakenrnto address and fill the gaps in relation to the Kuraz weir safety and an engineering geologicalrnappraisal.rnThus, through the present study, an attempt has been made to identify the adverse foundationrnconditions, from the review of the previous investigation reports and during the present studyrnthrough the surface and subsurface investigations, an overall appraisal of foundation condition ofrnthe site has been made.rnFrom the evaluation of the foundation condition, it has been deduced that the rocks on thernfoundation section are decomposed and needs grouting to improve strength condition. Thernabutments slope is kinametically stable for the present geometric configuration. The foundationrnsections in the presence study are characterized according to RMR rating. the ultimate bearingrncapacity value of the foundation materials were evaluated for each layer through RQD value ofrnrocks and SPT value of soil and the foundation materials with low bearing nature are identifiedrnand in order to improve the material condition of soil strata certain improvement measures arernsuggested.
