The main purpose of this study was to assess the practices and problems of decision making inrnselected preparatory schools of Horro Guduru Wollega. Descriptive survey method was employed.rnThe sample covered five preparatory schools. Respondents were principals, teachers, departmentrnheads, Parent Teachers Association heads, secondary school supervisors and students’ councilrnmembers.Teacher respondents were selected by simple random sampling technique and the othersrnwere by available of sampling. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaire, interview,rnfocus group discussion and document observation and review. The collected data were interpretedrnboth quantitatively and qualitatively. Besides, the statistical tools used to analyze the data werernfrequencies and percentages. The findings of the research showed that the school leaders were lessrnfollowed steps of decision making and have low knowledge on how to make decisions; the decisionsrnwere lowly meet the objectives and goals of the school. Most of the school principals were notrnqualified and trained in school leadership, not skilled enough in preparing participatory decisionrnmaking. They lowly encourage and involve stakeholders in decision making. Due to the abovernreasons the practices of decision making was poor and had many problems in the preparatoryrnschools of Horro Gudur Wollega zone. Based on the findings the following recommendations werernforwarded. Thus, it is advised to give awareness and encourage the stakeholders to increase theirrnparticipation in decision making. Professionally qualified leaders have to be assigned and giving onrnjob training for them by concerned bodies. The school leaders should have to make the schoolrnsecular and minimize the interferences of external bodies from school decision making. Also theyrnhave to take time and think over the consequences of the decisions before implementation, follow therndecision making steps and check whether the formulated decision meet the objectives and goals of thernschool.
