The study assessed some of the main factors that affect thernretention and attrition rate of teachers in the Regional State ofrnBenishangul - Gumuz. The sample consisted 235 teachers who wererndrawn from 19 primary and 6 secondary schools. Simple randomrnsampling method was used to select the primary schools and arnpurposful sampling approach was employed in selectingrnsecondary schools.rnthernIn order to address the study's objectives, arndescriptive survey method was also used.rnTo gather the necessary data, a questionnaire, unstructuredrninterviews, and documents were the main instruments employed.rnThe data accumulated from these documents was analysed inrnpercentages and statistical techniques such as the T -test, Chi-rnsquare, and ANOVA.rnThe results obtained from the study suggest that the reasonsrnfor leaving the profession were lack of ability to transfer from onernregion to another and an inadequate opportunity to extend one'srneducation.rnIn addition, most teachers seem to be dissatisfiedrnbecause of the absence of incentives, such as hardship allowancernpayment thought to be justified because of the working conditions inrnthe areas. Furthermore, findings reveal that most teachers appear tornbe displeased with the technical support rendered by supervisors andrnexperts in the region. Moreover, majority of the high school teachersrnwould change their profession even when paid on the same salaryscale. The study also suggested that high school teachers attritionrnrate was higher than the primary school teachers.rnBased on the findings and conclusions, recommendations arernmade to address the extisting problems in the Regional State underrnstudy.
