The purpose of the study was to examine school environment in government and privaternschools and the corresponding impact the school environment has on the self-esteem ofrnstudents and teachers. Data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 200rnstudents and 50 teachers. The respondents were selected from two private and tworngovernment schools. The data were analysed using percentages, mean scores, and t-test.rnThe findings of this research indicate the government schools’ and private schools’rnpsychological environment (as rated by students) had mean scores of 33.5 and 42.49rnrespectively. The government and private schools’ physical environment (as rated byrnstudents) had mean scores of 30.76 and 39.59 respectively. Government school studentsrnhad a self-esteem mean value of 37.41 while private school students had a self-esteemrnmean value of 38.12. The t-test results showed that there were significant differences in thernmean scores of the psychological and physical environment of private and governmentrnschools. When the self-esteem mean values were compared, there was no significantrnstatistical difference between students of private and government schools. Teachers meanrnscore of government and private schools’ psychological environment had mean scores 44.45rnand 49.52 respectively. The government and private schools’ physical environment (as ratedrnby teachers) had mean scores of 34.45 and 41.95 respectively. The results showed thatrnthere was significant difference in the mean scores of the psychological and physicalrnenvironments between government and private schools. The self-esteem mean value ofrngovernment school teachers was 34.00 while private school teachers had a self-esteemrnmean value of 35.14. The above results show that improving the school environment ofrngovernment schools remains to be a top priority to educational leaders to improve the qualityrnof teaching and learning and promote teachers and students’ wellbeing in schools settings. Itrnis also worth researching why school environment did not significantly impact the self-rnesteem of students.
