The purpose of the study was to assess the major human, institutional & environmental majorrnproblems influencing absenteeism in government general secondary schools of Bole Sub-city ofrnthe Addis Ababa City Government. A descriptive survey design was chosen for the study sincernthe purpose is describing and examining the major human, institutional and environmentalrnmajor problems influencing absenteeism in government general secondary schools. Asrninstruments for data collection, questionnaire, interview, ,focus group discussion and documentrnanalysis were used The research applied qualitative & quantitative research methods. Samplesrnwere drawn from students, parents, home room teachers & school principals. The data wererncollected, checked for completeness, classified, arranged and organized in tables and figures.rnThe data were analyzed and interpreted by employing quantitative and qualitative analysisrntechniques. The findings suggested that family follow up, peer pressure & lack of ability tornresist it, lack of interest in learning, difficulty of lesson contents and school surroundingrnenvironment like places for khat and alcoholic bars, the hustle and bustle business activity andrnthe role of bullies around school were the major causes for studentâ€™s absenteeism. Based on thernresults of the study, it was concluded that human, institutional and environmental factors haverntheir own impact on studentsâ€™ absenteeism. Based on the conclusions of the study, it wasrnrecommended that discussing with parents, providing trainings for students, making the schoolrnattractive, working with governmental authorities and empowering students capacity are vitalrnmajors to cure the problem.
