The purpose of this study was to assess the practices of transformational leadership inrnsecondary schools in north shoa zone. The practices of school principals to implementrntransformational leadership and the major challenges that hinder the implementation ofrntransformational leadership were assessed in the study. Descriptive survey design wasrnused in this study. The study conducted in six secondary schools. The sample schools werernselected by simple random sampling techniques. Twenty four school leaders (principals,rndepartment heads, and unit leaders and one hundred fifty eight teachers were included inrnthe sample by purposive and simple random sampling techniques respectively. Datarngathering instruments were questionnaires and interviews. The quantitative data werernanalyzed using percentage, mean, frequency counts and an independent t-test wasrnemployed. From the finding obtained in this study, the school principals were not familiarrnwith the system of practicing transformational leadership. This is because the schoolrnprincipals have lack of confidence, lack of commitment and collaboration, lack ofrnmotivation, lack of having necessary skills and knowledge gap, no properly articulaternvision, mission, and values, lack of effective two way communications with in the schoolrncommunities and unable to delegate of duties to subordinates. Due to this the schoolrnleaders didn’t implement the components of transformational leadership in the schools.rnThere were problems in practicing of the components of transformational leadershiprn(idealized influences, inspirational motivation, individual consideration, and intellectualrnstimulation) by school principals. Lack of school plan that has clear objectives of whatrncan be achieved in the future, lack of necessary skills to implement transformationalrnleadership, lack of motivations and commitments of the stakeholders, lack of articulatingrnvision, mission, and values of the school properly and lack of ability to communicate thernvision to followers, lack of sufficient budget and learning materials were the mostrnseriously challenges that hinders the implementation of transformational leadership inrnsecondary schools of north shoa, oromia. All school leaders are advised to establishrnstrategies that helps to develop the practices to implementing transformationalrnleadership in the schools.
