The main purpose of this study was to assess the practices and problems of the implementation ofrncontinuous professional development in government secondary schools of west Wollega Zone, inrnYubdo Woreda, Oromia Regional State. To conduct the study four research questions were raised.rnDescriptive survey method was employed to achieve the aim. Simple random sampling andrnavailability sampling techniques were employed to select 51 teachers, 30 schools managementrnbodies, 5 schools’ continuous professional development facilitators, 3 woreda teachers’rndevelopment focal person with the total of 89 participants out of 197study population. From the fivernschools, five teacher’s development focal persons were selected through availability samplingrntechniques for that they provided relevant information. The major problems identified were, lack ofrntraining manuals, irrelevance and un clarity of the available training manuals, lack of trainedrnfacilitators, insufficiency of supports provided for teachers growth, CPD activities were notrnevaluated based on the school plan and impacts of the CPD on learners’ performance was notrncontinuously assessed. Lack of incentives for good performance, insufficient allocation of budget,rnand school systems were not implemented in the way that can fit the training needs of teachers. Tornovercome the problems encountered, recommendations have been forwarded: concernedrneducational officials at different levels should work hard to orienting teachers in advance with thernoverall contents of the professional growth and they should assess and shape the planning system,rnmotivating teachers to willingly take more responsibilities in the implementation process, employingrntrained facilitators and supervisors, and allocation of sufficient resources to effectively achieve thernintended goals.rnKeywords: continuous professional development, mentoring, mentee
