The Practice Of Career Development In A Learning Organization The Case Of Save The Children International Ethiopian Country Office

The aim of this study was to evaluate the employee career development practices in a learning organization with respect to specifically assessing how career development is linked with organizational learning in SCI Ethiopia. To achieve this objective, the study employed descriptive survey method with mixed design approach. Primary and secondary data was used. The study used close ended self-administered questionnaires to collect quantitative data from 183 sample respondents and interview questions used to collect qualitative data from 3 senior managers. These respondents were selected from 380 target population in three Offices located at Addis Ababa, Ambo and Adama using lottery method of simple random sampling. The questionnaires were analyzed with descriptive statistics using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS version 20). The findings revealed that there is a culture that highly encourages work place learning in SCI. However, there is no commitment from the organization in linking organizational learning with employee career development practices and there is no employee participation in career competencies development to enhance ownership of their own career development. In addition, there is no clear employee career development policy and strategy. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommended that there should be a deliberate strategy of linking organizational learning with perceived employee career development through joint career competency management.
