The purpose of the study was to asseses practices and challenges of continuous professionalrndevelopment in secondary schools of Adea Berga Woreda, West Shoa Zone. It was attempted tornanalyze the CPD practices and challenges of a selected Secondary schools found in Adea BergarnWoreda. The study employed description survey method employing quantitative and arnqualitative data. Fifty four teachers from two secondary schools were selected using simplernrandom sampling technique as well as two principals, four vice principals, twelve departmentrnheads, two CPD facilitators, one cluster supervisor and two woreda education office expertsrnwere purposively selected as sources of data for the study. Questionnaire, interview, focus grouprndiscussion and document analysis were used as data gathering tools. The quantitative data werernanalyzed quantitatively using percentage, mean and standard deviation. The qualitative datarnwere used to supplement /or triangulate as appropriate. The analyses of the data revealed thatrnthe CPD practices at the selected secondary school do not have the basic features of successfulrnteacher professional development programs. However, the understanding of teachers about thernimportance, activity and goal of CPD were good. Though the administrative structure to run thernCPD program is set at school level, the schoolsâ€™ contexts were not supportive enough to run thernprogram; the CPD program was not strongly linked with the school improvement program andrnstudentsâ€™ achievement; and it was not engaging the teachers. So, serious consideration should berngiven mainly to the capacity development of all the actors involved in the delivery of thernprogram.rnKeywords: Continuous professional development, teacher learning, mentoring.
