The purpose of this research was to investigate the usage of communication technologies of rnsecondary school students in Burao district. The descriptive survey design was used; also rnStratified random sampling was employed in sampling the respondents. Responses were elicited rnfrom students in two secondary schools one public secondary school and one private secondary rnschool was the target population. The target students were five hundred (500) students from the rntwo secondary schools. The study sample was two hundred twenty two (222) students. Also, the rninterview was conducted through face to face interactions among fifteen of the school principals rnand teachers including thirteen teachers and two principles selected purposively. Frequency, rnpercentages, mean and standard deviations were used in the analysis of data. To achieve the rnobjectives of the research, the study used a mixed method approach which involved the survey of rnstudent’s responses on the influence of modern technology on the student’s academic rnperformance. The study revealed that a great number of students in Burao district use most rnfrequently Smart phones but other technologies such as laptops, desktops and tablets were also rnused. As the research results revealed most of the secondary school students in Burao district rnused these modern technologies for their learning purposes and academic issues as well as rnsocial media. Since they used these technologies including the social media for more than two rnhours daily, it influences their academic performance. Hence, students should be thought to rnbetter manage their study time; students should create a balance between using the technology rnfor seeking knowledge from the internet and usage of social media, also teachers should ensure rnthat students use modern technology as a tool to improve their academic performances. In rnaddition schools should enact rules and regulations to protect students from misusing the rnmodern technology.
