This study was undertaken to assess the levelrnof effectiveness of senior secondary school principalsrnin Ethiopia as they predispose their influence overrntheir staff both in task performance and grouprnsatisfaction (morale) activities. The analysis wasrnbased on the application of Halpin's 'Behavioral'rnmodel.rnA rigorous statistical procedure was employedrnon the data derived basically from the perceptualrnratings of the three independent groups that bear arndirect impact on the principalS leadership rQle.rn!he outcome of the data analysia revealed that, fewerrnprincipals were on the 'trans~~tional style' with thernlargest proportion emphasizing a consideration behavior~rnperhaps affecting school effectiveness.rnOn the whole, the findings showed that factorsrnsignificant in school leadership are centred aroundrnstudent enrolle~ent size, staff motivation, principals'rnmanag~ent training, and the attitudes of the '!Iorkrngroups towards the power of the principal.rnIt was thus suggested that to improve the leadershiprncapacity of principals the present status of schoolsrnwith respect to ever increasing enrollment, lowerrnstaff morale, and bottlenecks in finance and facilitiesrnmust be tackled adequately before individual principal'srnexcellence and effectiveness can be realized.
