Background:-Physical Trauma/Injury is defined as a physical damage to a human being causedrnby intolerable transfer of energy. It can be mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, or radiationrnenergy or by the sudden absence of heat or oxygen. rnObjective: - The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge and practice of acute traumarncare among health professionals working at selected government health centers in Addis AbabarnEthiopia, 2019 from March 11-April 8/2019. rnMethods:-Institutional based cross sectional study design was utilized to assess knowledge andrnpractice of emergency unit health professionals found in ten sub cities of Addis Ababa towardsrnacute trauma care. Structured, Pretested and self-administered questionnaire was used for datarncollection. Data were imported into Epidata 4.4 and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Thernalpha level was set at 0.05 to determine statistical significance. rnResult: - There were 118 participants. From these, majority of the participants73 (61.9 %) werernNurses and females‟ accounts for 72 (61.0 %). Majorities; 77(65.3 %) of health professionals hadrncollege degree and among them 73 (61.9%) had more than 4 years‟ work experience. About 90rn(76%) of the respondent had trauma related training once in their clinical career. Nearly half ofrnthe respondents (47.5%) had good knowledge scores, with the mean score of 10.81 (SD = 2.86)rnand Majority, 82(69.5%) of respondents scored poor in practical assessment with Mean score ofrn3.65(SD= 1.6).Those who have work-experience for more than four years [p=.011, (CI= (037,rn0.653)] were significantly associated with poor knowledge of health professionals related tornacute trauma care. rnrnConclusion: - In conclusion, emergency unit health professionals in these health centersrndemonstrated overall unsatisfactory levels of knowledge and practice. It is clear that ongoingrneducation on how to manage trauma victim must be periodically under taken to enhance andrnupdate health professionals‟ knowledge about current and emerging acute trauma care practice.
