Back ground: Pre-hospital emergency care is the emergency care delivered to a patient beforerntransfer to a hospital or proper healthcare facility. Basic Life Support is refers to the carernhealthcare providers and public safety professionals provide to patients who are experiencingrnrespiratory and cardiac arrest or airway obstruction. rnObjective: To assess knowledge and practice towards basic life support and its’ associatedrnfactors among nurses practicing in ambulance at fire and emergency prevention and rescuernauthority of pre hospital care setting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from March to April 20, 2019. rnMethods: Institutional based a cross sectional survey with complete enumeration of allrnrespondents was conducted on participants from fire and emergency prevention and rescuernauthority during the study period from March to April 20, 2019. Self-administered questionersrnwere used to collect data from respondents and then it was presented by descriptive datarnpresentation methods for descriptive variable. Binary and multiple logistic Regression analysisrnwe used to show effect of independent variable on dependent variable. Data quality wasrncontrolled by pre-testing the tools and providing training the data collectors rnResult: About 129 respondents were studied in this study with the response rate of 95%. Ofrnthem more than half 76(58.9%) were female.rnAccording to this study the overall BLS knowledge andrnpractice skills were found inadequate.rnMore than half of the participants 68 (52.7%) and 73(56.6%)rnhad poor BLS knowledge and practice level respectively. Educational status, previous clinicalrnexposures and involvement in resuscitation were showed significant association with BLSrnknowledge and practice on both binary and multiple logistic regressions. rnConclusion and recommendation: since the result of this study revealed that overall BLS knowledgernand practice skills were found inadequatern which were not enough to provide these crucial lifesavingrnprocedures through sound BLS. In-service education and repetitive hand on practice about basicrnlife support maneuvers for nurses must be considered to improve their basic life supportrnknowledge and practice.
