Background: Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding (UGIB) is a common and life-threatening medicalrnemergency requiring careful evaluation from the very first episode and arrival as an attempt tornpredict and reduce the risk of re-bleeding or death. It has an annual incidence of approximately 67rnto 150 per 100,000 with an estimated mortality rates ranging between 6% and 15%, with higherrnrates of death for those in an unstable hemodynamic state. rnObjective: The aim of our study was to determine the clinical characteristics and outcome of UGIBrnpatients in TASH adult emergency rooms from January1-December 31, 2019, Addis Ababa,rnEthiopia. rnMethods: We performed descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study on 132 adult UGIBrnpatients in TASH from January1-DecemberV31, 2019. All the UGIB patients seen in thernemergency department during the study period were included. A prepared questionnaire was usedrnto collect data on sociodemographic and medical history of the participants. We analyzed therncollected data and displayed our results using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. Frequency distribution,rn95% confidence Interval, regression and cross tabulation were used for statistical analysis. rnResults From 132 patients, 97 (73.5%) of them were male (the M:F ratio was 2.8:1). The meanrnage was 35.99 + 1.324 years. The most common presenting complaints were hematemesis (92.4%)rnand fatigue (68.2%) followed by melena (67.4%) and loss of appetite (45.5%).
