A Study On Assessment Of Knowlodge Attitude And Practices On The Prevention Of Ventilator Associated Pnuemonia Among Nurses Working In Five Selected Adult Intesive Care Units Of Government Hospitals Addis Ababa Ethiopia
Background: Ventilator associated pneumonia is the most common nosocomial infection occursrnin people who are on intubation and mechanical ventilation. The gaps between knowledge,rnattitude and actual clinical practices on its’ prevention have not been sufficiently studied andrnneeds further research which may contribute to the quality of care and improvement of criticalrnpatient’s out come. Besides, nurse professionals who are providing services in a high risk criticalrncare setting should be competent to assess, monitor and effectively respond to the needs ofrncritically ill patients.rnObjectives: The general objective of the study is to assess knowledge, attitude and practices onrnthe prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia among nurses working in adult intensivernCare unit of five selected government hospitals, Addis Ababa.rnMethodology: Across sectional descriptive study, design was employ. Data collected fromrnAICU nurses of five selected government hospitals. It was enter using SPSS version 21. Forrnwindows and then analyzed. The study was analyzed using table and graph the study wasrnconduct from DEC/ 2016 - June 2017rnRESULTS: Out 120 respondents, the respondent rate of study participant was 95.5%, majorityrn76.7% were aged between 20-29 yrs, the mean and + SD of age were 27.58 and 6.5 respectively.rn56.7% were females, 80.8% had degree, Majority of Adult Intensive Care nurses 55.5 % hadrnbeen working in the ICU for less than 2yrs, qualification majority of respondents 57.5% juniorrnnurses, 60% were single.rn59.5% had good knowledge on VAP prevention where as 39.7% poor knowledge, 69 (57%)rngood practice and 42.5% poor practice on VAP prevention and 54.5% positive attitude where asrn44.6% negative attitude VAP prevention of VAP. There was a significant difference inrnknowledge between respondents with ICU work experience (p = 0.015) and there was nornsignificant deference on the age and educational level and concerning attitude and practice therernwas significant deference age with practice (p=0.044) and work experience with attitude (p=rn0.043) respectively.rnCONCLUSIONS: The present study assessed the current knowledge attitudes and practices ofrnhealth professionals regarding VAP prevention in adult intensive care unit majority ofrnrespondents had good knowledge 68(59.50%), attitudes and practice towards VAP prevention.rnIncreased health Professional’s awareness may improve their attitudes towards VAP prevention.rnRECOMMENDATIONS: TO Addis Ababa University and Addis Ababa health bureau tornencourage nurses to follow strict acceptable evidence based practice protocol in service trainingrnor education. Similar study recommended including large sample size in other hospitals, whichrnprovide care for critically ill patients, further research on factors affecting implementation ofrnVAP prevention strategies was recommend.rnKey words: knowledge, attitude, practice, KAPs, VAP, and ICU
