Background Informationon pattern and outcome of adult medical EDrnadmissions is scarce in Ethiopia.rnObjective The main objective of this study wasto assess the patterns andrnoutcomes of adult emergency medical admissions to ED of Yekatit 12rnHospital.rnMethodology The study design was retrospective cross sectionalstudy of allrnadult medical emergency patients admitted to ED from September 2013 tornAuguest 2014 at Yekatit 12 hospital, Addis Ababa.rnResults: There were a total of 711 adult medical ED admissions. The averagernadult medical ED admission per month was 64. The majority of adult medical EDrnadmissions were due to non-infectious diseases (53.6%, N= 381) whereas infectiousrndiseases accounted for over one-third. The leading causes of adult medical EDrnadmissions were DKA, Pneumonia, AGE with hypovolemic states, CHF and acuternasthmatic exacerbations. The crude death rate in the adult medical ED is 3.9% andrnthe mean length of stay is 2 days.rnConclusions: The pattern of adult medical ED admission in Yekatit 12 hospitalrnis variable. Higher proportion of admissions was due to NCDs. DiabeticrnKetoacidosis, Pneumonias, AGEs with hypovolemic states, cardiovascularrnemergencies and acute asthmatic attacks are also among the leading causes.rnThere is a need for action to improve the readiness of the health care tornrespond to these prevailing medical emergencies. Medical ED outcome wasrnfound to be affected by certain demographic and clinical characteristics ofrnpatients.
