Resettlement as state sponsored activity started in the past few decades. The currentrngovernment is carrying up resettlement schemes in response to the recurrent droughts andrnfood insecurity that occurred in the country. However, the programs lack environmentalrnimpact assessment and environmental management plans which led to the degradation ofrnresources in the host areas. This study tries to see the impact of resettlement on the woodyrnvegetation of Jawie area in terms of vegetation composition and structural variation.rnWoody tree and shrub species composition and structure variations that occurred in therntwo sites were studied by following systematic random sampling technique. Speciesrncomposition and distribution of individuals among different land uses was also examined.rnVegetation data were collected on plots distributed along transects. The result indicatedrnthat species composition and structure variation occurred in the settlement arearnparticularly in farmland and homestead areas. Relatively the study area have good speciesrnrichness even though some species were (e.g 24 in farmlands and 38 in homesteads) absentrncompared to the intact vegetations. In addition, woody plants in settlement area was existsrnwith only few large sized individuals which are remnants of past vegetation observed in thernfield. Regeneration status of settlement area is not healthy, rather seedlings and saplingsrndistribution restricted in some areas only. Coupled with poor planning of the schemes, rnpopulation pressure and the associated demand for more cropland, fuel wood andrnconstruction have aggravated the problem of vegetation degradation. From the currentrnstudy it was found that the area is under problem of environmental degradation, whichrncalls for immediate attention from all concerned bodies. Hence, there is need to preparernand implement appropriate land use and management plan focusing on the needs of thernlocal people and the sustainability of the environment. Agro forestry and farm level treernplanting will also help to reduce the pressure on the natural vegetation.rnKey words: Resettelment, woody species, regeneration, vegetation degradation
