Information on Land Use and Land Cover changes that occurred from 1973 to 2000 in Harenna forest and surrounding area was compared using remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS). The study was conducted in about 235,335.3 ha area within and surrounding Bale Mountains National Park of Oromia region. The objectives of this study are to understand the causes and to quantify the Land Use and Land Cover change around Harenna forest and to asses the trend of Land Use and Land Cover changes. Three sets of remotely sensed data, Landsat MSS (1973), Landsat TM (1986) and Landsat ETM+ imagery (2000), with a time span of twenty seven years were used for the study. In addition to the biophysical data, socio-economic characteristics of the area were also used to interpret the causes of biophysical feature changes occurring in the study area. Generally the land use land covers of the study area were classified into dense forest, open forest, open woodland, bare land, agricultural land and shrub land
