The global solar radiation potential of Ethiopia is reported in detail. The monthlyrnaverage totals of global radiation on a horizontal surface in Ethiopia have been processed, rnanalyzed and presented. The models used in this analysis are the SimpleModelrnof Atmospheric Radiative Transfer of Sunshine (SMARTS) and for Vapor PressurernRadiation Model (VP-RAD). The data used in this study include maximum and minimumrntemperature, relative humidity, precipitation and surface pressure for a period ofrna year. Monthly average daily global radiation for the local time 12 GMT is producedrnand analyzed. The monthly mean of the daily global solar radiation on a horizontalrnsurface is about 12 MJ m−2 according to the VP-RAD model prediction and 19.5rnMJ m−2 according to the SMARTS model prediction. The monthly average of dailyrnglobal solar radiation estimated by SMARTS model varies from a maximum value ofrn23.66 MJ m−2 in April at Jijjiga to a minimum value of 17.42 MJ m−2 in Decemberrnat Gondar. The two models estimated results are compared with the measured valuesrnat Addis Ababa for the year 1983. We conclude, based upon our study analysis, thatrnEthiopia is characterized on average, by relatively high daily global irradiance ratesrnand high percentage of clear days
