Background: The lack of attention given to demand has certainly led to resources being wastedrnon unwanted or inappropriate systems around the world. These failures have driven sectorrnprofessionals to the conclusion that service provision must be market driven. The need torn9rnunderstand the market - to assess the demand - for water and sanitation services is therefore arnkey for success.rnObjectives: the general objective of the study is to assess demand of households for improvedrnwater and sanitation services in Shebedino Woreda, SNNPR, 2008.rnMethods: A cross- sectional study was conducted from March 29 – April 26/ 2008 in ShebedinornWoreda, Sidama Zone, Southern Ethiopia, using well-structured and pretested questionnaires, indepthrninterview and focus group discussion. A total of 635 questionnaires and 5 in-depthrninterviews and 4 focus group discussions with key informants were used to collect thernquantitative and qualitative data respectively. The collected data was cleaned and analyzed inrnSPSS version 11 while the data entry was done using EPI6.rnResult: The majority of respondents 531(83.6%) were using different coping mechanisms orrnstrategies to get safe and adequate water supply while 236 (37.2%) of respondents had not usedrndifferent coping strategies for improved sanitation services. The extent of communityrnparticipation throughout the life cycle of the project was found to be as low as 131 (20.6%) forrnimproved sanitation services and 18 (2.8%) for improved water services. Additionally, thernmajority of respondents 559 (88%) considered the approaches being used by programrnimplementers for improved water services as supply driven while 273 (43%) categorized thernapproach of program implementers for sanitation services as demand driven. The study resultrnalso revealed that the majority of respondents[531(83.62% and 587(92.44%]) were willing to payrn10 cents for 25 liter of water and, 5 cents for single day use of latrines respectively. The averagernmonthly expense of households for water was 2.36% of their average monthly income.rnConclusion and recommendation: Generally, the demand of beneficiary communities forrnimproved water and sanitation services was found to be low. Therefore, water and sanitationrnprogram implementers need to create or stimulate demand using different techniques if the waterrnand sanitation condition of the Woreda is supposed to be improved.
