Assessments Of Groundwater And Its Vulnerability To Pollution By Vertical Electrical Sounding In Adaa Plain

The purpose of this study was to locate the possible water bearing horizons forrnground water development by using the Vertical electrical sounding (VES)rnmethods and assess the Groundwater vulnerability to pollution by aquiferrnvulnerability index (AVI) using resistivity result. The sample was taken fromrnAda’a plain. Ada’a plain is falls within in the upper part of Awash River Basin.rnIt is located at the central parts of Ethiopia, in Oromia Regional State. It has anrnElevation of 1600 and 1900 masl and approximately lies between latitudes 8rn030’N and 8 0 45’N 38050'E and 39015'E. The results of data analysis indicaternthat at grater pseudo-depth along NNE-SSW margin of the study area has lowrnresistivity values. The area favorable for ground water production is thatrncharacterized by low resistivity values i.e. the weathered layer and fracturedrnzone have been identified as an aquifer. Parameters affecting vulnerability tornpollution are mainly permeability and thickness of each protective layer. Aquiferrnvulenarabilty Index (AVI) which provides low, moderate and high classificationrnranges for expected protective layers, which can be deduced from indirectrnresistivity methods. The results of AVI values have shown that most Stations arernthe most vulnerable to pollution while Stations 48, 71, and 81 are the leastrnVulnerable to pollution.rnTherefore it can be recommended that ground water developers can use thosernspecific localities to construct wells to tap ground water for the local people asrnwell as the surrounding areas. It also recommended that careful should be takenrnwhen sitting any agricultural and other waste components for betterrnsafeguarding the groundwater resources.
