The general objective of this study was to assess the solid waste managementrnpractices in Addis Ababa, specifically in three selected condominium housingrnsites in Yeka sub city. The study tried to identify the main causes for thernineffectiveness of solid waste management. The study used mixed-methodrnapproach. For a quantitative method a structured close ended questionnaire wasrnused and for the qualitative method, key informant in-depth interviews and fieldrnobservation were conducted to collect the data for this study. A multi stagedrnsampling was used to select the sample households from the three selectedrncondominium sites for the study. From the ten sub cities in Addis Ababa Yekarnsub city was purposely selected then Yeka Abado, Yeka Ayat 1 and Yeka Ayat 2rncondominium housing sites were again purposely selected. After that 80, 60 andrn60 households were randomly selected from Yeka Abado, Yeka Ayat 1 and YekarnAyat 2 condominium housing sites respectively. Simple random sampling wasrnused to select 4 solid waste management experts and 6 solid waste collectionrnworkers for the key informant in-depth interview. Addis Ababa, the capital ofrnEthiopia, is suffering from lack of effective solid waste management.rnCondominium housing is a new phenomenon in Addis Ababa in particular and inrnEthiopia in general, it is being widely applicable, and large number ofrncondominium houses are currently under construction. Primary data wererncollected via questionnaires, interview, and field observations. Whereas thernsecondary data were extracted from different published and unpublishedrnmaterials. Both primary and secondary sources were used to achieve thernobjectives. The analysis of this study was carried out using both qualitative andrnquantitative techniques. The result of the study revealed that the factorsrncontributing to the ineffectiveness of solid waste management basically rely onrnthree major causes: lack of awareness and training based on a study, lack ofrnlaw enforcement and lack of resource and man power.
