The study was intended to assess waste management practices of Burayu plc abattoir and itsrnimpacts on surrounding community in Burayu town, Oromia Regional state, Ethiopia inrn2019. The research design used was descriptive research design to agree on the wasternmanagement practices of Burayu abattoir. This design offers to the researchers a profile ofrndescribed relevant aspects of the phenomena of interest from an individual, organizational,rnand industry-oriented perspective. Burayu plc.abattoir was selected purposively based on thernavailability of abattoir and its severity impact on the environment. As to assess its impact onrnsurrounding community, Gafarsa Burayu and Keta Burayu kebeles was selected purposivelyrnbased on their proximity to the abattoir. For this study a total of 330 households werernselected using random sampling method. The selected sample households were interviewedrnusing structured questioners and focus group discussion, key informant interview and fieldrnobservation were also used to collect the data. The collected data were analysed using SPSSrnversion 20 software. The data revealed that about 158 (47.9%) of household respondentsrnsurrounding the abattoir was strongly disagreed with the presence of abattoir in theirrnvicinity. As study result indicated the abattoir wastes were directly discharged to BurayurnRiver and residential areas without considering environmental pollution. As a result aboutrn48.2%, 36.4% and 42.7% of the respondents agreed as the local community in the area wasrnsuffering with the prevalence of difficulty in breathing diseases, coughing and asthma diseasernrespectively as a result of poor abattoir waste management. Developing comprehensivernmanagement system for abattoir waste including blood wastes can be further utilized asrnblood meal, wastewater can be treated and reused for greenery, irrigation and cleaningrnpurposes and intestinal contents can be used for biogas generation and the derived from it also used for natural fertilizer to reduce environmental pollution and public health issues.
