Land-use land-cover change has become a significant environmental concern at the local, regional and global levels. Land use/ land cover changes are caused by population pressure further because of the expansion of agricultural lands through unplanned and inappropriate land management practices. Even though, LULC change analysis has been implemented in urban areas to assess urban growth; has not been properly employed to tackle problems related to LULC changes in most parts of the countryside in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aims to dynamic Land use/ land cover change analysis using GIS and remote sensing techniques in Girar Jarso woreda focusing on the trend, the rate, extent, and distribution of various land use and cover changes, from 1984 to 2020. To achieve the intended objectives study has used the Maximum likelihood supervised classification method for LU/LC analyses and Post Classification techniques for LU/LC change detection supported with interview and focus group discussion. The result of this research indicated that cultivated land has increased from time to time and, it occupied 79% and 84% of the total landmass of the woreda in 2008 and 2020, respectively. A similar settlement also showed a large increment with the 36 years from 1984 to 2020, which means settlement accounts for 5% in 1984 and increased to 7% in 2020. On the other ways as a result of the LULC change analysis between 1984 and 2020 indicated that grassland, vegetation, and wetlands dramatically decreased. Grassland decreased from 1487 hectares in 1984 to 1032 hectares in 1996 and further decreased to 381 in 2020. Similarly, vegetation was reduced in size from 11785.1 ha to 8867 ha between 1984 and 1996 and natural vegetation further decreased to 4421.4 ha in 2020. The result of the study revealed that observed land use and land cover changes are caused by population pressure and the expansion of agricultural land. Therefore, birth control methods and Environmental education emphasizing the economic and environmental role of the LULC change correlating its long term promising survival importance to those communities and with a green economy policy of Government should be planned and implemented based on common consensus with the community.
