The aim of this study was to assess solid waste management implication to waste pickers’rnfood security in Arada Sub-City, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 76 Waste pickers were selectedrnbased on the product of Yamane formula using Simple random and purposive samplingrntechniques to get information and quantitative data were collecting using questionnairernsurvey and analyzed using measure of central tendency (mean) and measure of dispersionrn(standard deviation).Qualitative data were collected through key informant interview andrnsecondary data sources were analyzed using thematic content analysis and there wasrninadequate solid waste management due to lack of strict rules and regulation as well as lackrnof social awareness exist in the sub city in particularly in Arada sub-city. The findings of thisrnstudy revealed that there is limited financial, physical, and human resources, lack of wasternmanagement policy, social inclusiveness of waste pickers, and scarcity of food stay alive inrnthe sub city. The waste pickers have challenges of income for their livelihood, lack ofrnadoption of capital-intensive, lack of awareness of communities and there is lack ofrngovernment attention on solid waste management. The level of education of waste pickersrnwas low because they were immigrants from rural areas due to that they were not effective inrnadoption of technologies. The distance of transfer station, inappropriate waste collection,rnand informal community waste containers had also direct impact on solid wasternmanagement. Location of waste storage, food insecure of waste pickers, factors related tornfinancial constraints, weak enforcement of rules and regulations, socio-economic, culturalrnfactors and awareness of the communities affects them. Thus, it was recommend that tornincrease awareness of the community, responsible bodies (Government, Community andrnHealth Bureau) should pay attention to the issue in order to improve the current poor solidrnwaste management practices and to improve the food security of waste pickers in the town.
