The main objective of this study was to determine the English languagernneeds of Surveying Technology students' academic and occupationalrnsetting.rnSo as to effectuate this, five groups of respondents were identified.rnSurveying Technology students, surveying technology instructors,rnEnglish language instructors taken from the teaching staff and on-thejobrnsurveying graduates and their employers were taken from other nonteachingrnstaff. From each group, respondents were selected usingrnpurposive, available and random sampling techniques. As a result, 80rnstudents, 9 surveying instructors, 8 English language instructors, 12 onthe-rnjob surveying graduates and 2 employers were taken as a source ofrninformation.rnQualitative and quantitative data were obtained from these subjectsrnmainly through questionnaire, interview and focus-group discussion.rnQuestionnaires were distributed to the 4 groups of subjects. Interviewrnand focus- group discussion were conducted with the English languagerninstructors and survey students. The questionnaires were designed forrnsurveying students, surveying instructors and English languagerninstructors to elicit information about the academic situation. Therninterview for English language instructors and focus-group discussionrnwere designed to get more information about the academic situationrnwhich couldn't be obtained through the questionnaires. Thernquestionnaire for the On-Job and surveying graduates and interview forrnthe employers were to obtain information about the language needs ofrnthe learners in the occupational setting.rnEnglish language macro skills and a number of activities which werernthought to be widely used in the academic and occupational situationsrnwere selected and presented to the respondents to rate their frequency,rnand importance level as well as students' respective abilities inrnperforming them. The findings indicated the existence of a considerablerngap between the type and the extent of English language students arernexpected to use in both academic and occupational careers and thernEnglish language course being offered. Therefore, taking this gap intornconsideration recommendations have been made.
