Oral poetry is an improvised narrative or song on a given theme that serves tornpass on a range of facts and beliefs from one generation to the other in a givenrnsociety. In order to improve their life in many ways, Borena Wereda's ruralrnpeople migrate to urban areas. These people move to Awash, Gewanie, Asayita,rnJimma, Tebbi, Addis Ababa and other areas. As one of the social phenomena, rnthe people have developed oral poems by which they record and recount theirrnfeelings and experiences.rnThe study has relied on qualitative data collection methods (in-depth interview, rnobservation, focus group discussion and tape recordings). More than 90 poemsrnwere collected and the first 44 were selected and thematically analyzed.rnThe study takes into account the variables of Cernea and Scott's (2000) IRRrnmodel from resettlement and displacement theories. In the oral poems, most ofrnCernea and Scott's (2000) variables were found drawing parallel lines.rnBased on the methods used, the themes of the oral poetry suggest that therndescriptions of urban areas before the relocation and realities found in thernurban areas after migrants have migrated do not fit to their expectations. Thernpoems that are composed to describe their feelings and expectations before theyrnmigrate portray urban areas as suitable and comfortable where jobs arernabundant and money can be earned without much difficulty.rnThe oral poems that are composed to show migrants' feelings and experiencesrndepict urban areas as places where they have encountered difficulties. This isrncontradictory to what has been expected by them, before.
