Environmental problems such as air and water pollution, solid waste andrnclimate changes in urban areas are the results of human behavior. Onlyrnchange in human behavior can reduce these environmental problems. Thus, rnstudying the level of students’ environmental awareness, attitude andrnintension is an entry point to change this situation among the youngrngenerations. Therefore, the objective of the study is to find out students’ levelrnof awareness, attitude and intension in relation to urban environmentalrnproblems. As a methodology both secondary and primary data, quantitativernand qualitative data have been used. Using stratified sampling method 350rnpreparatory students were selected for the study. The data were analyzed byrnusing descriptive and inferential statistics. The research findings indicate thatrnthe majority of the students hold moderate level of environmental awareness, rnfavorable attitude and found to have an intension to contribute forrnenvironmental improvement. There is no difference in students’ environmentalrnawareness, attitude and intension based on gender and grade level.rnRelatively higher age groups were found to have better awareness and morernfavorable attitude, but their intension is the same. Social science studentsrnwere found to have more favorable attitude and better intension than naturalrnscience students, but they are similar in their awareness. Students in thernmissionary school were found to have more favorable attitude and intensionrnto contribute for environmental protection than private and governmentrnschools, but students from private school were found to have betterrnawareness. There was a weak positive bivariate correlation among students’rnenvironmental awareness, attitude and intension. And the predicative powerrnof one dependent variable over the other is also weak. School subjects are thernmajor source of environmental information. Based on the findings it wasrnrecommended that, in order to increase students’ environmental awareness, rnattitude and intension curricula have to be developed in a participatoryrnapproach by including the needs and priorities of students and the linkagernbetween schools and the community should be strong.rnKeywords: Students’ awareness, attitude and intension, urban environmentalrnproblems, Addis Ababa
