The purpose of this study was to assess the problems of gaining access tornhousing land in Gondar town with particular emphasis on the experience ofrngovernment employees and factory workers.rnTo achieve this objectives sample government employees and factory workersrnwere selected using two-stage stratified sampling method. Questionnaire and relevantrndocuments were used to gather information pertinent to the study. Percentages, ratiosrnand coefficient of correlation were used in analysing the collected data.rnThe result show that Gondar is faced with a substantial problem of housingrnshortage. On the average 6.0 percent of the total households in Gondar town have nornaccess to either owned or rented private residential unit. Inaddition there is arnconsiderably noticeable level of overcrowding. The responses of the governmentrnemployees and factory workers indicate the presence of overcrowding in Kefitegna Onernand Kefitegna Three.rnThe problem of housing shortage in Gondar is aggravated by the difficulties ofrnthe residents in gaining access to housing land in the town. Marriage, household sizernand income were found to have influence on gaining access to housing land by thernrespondents. Lack of spatial integration of the new residential sites with otherrnlocations in the town, housing standards, the precondition set in the approval of thernsupply of land, delays in the provision of land and the nature of the town's relief werernalso found to have an effect on gaining access to housing land in Gondar.rnOn the basis of the findings the study recommends the need for increasing, asrnmuch as possible, the supply of land for those who are in need of constructing theirrnown shelter by alloting the existing vacant lands in the already built up areas withrnreasonable price, by providing the basic infrastructural services in the new residentialrnsites, by revising the current housing standards and the preconditions set in the processrnof supplying land and by participating the public in matters of housing landrnandhousingconstruction
