BackgroundrnAntenatal care, ANC, is an entry point to give care for pregnant women, to prevent problems thatrnpotentially endanger the life of a pregnant woman and her fetus, to advise family and communityrnon how to prepare for birth and potential complications and to promote the benefit of skilledrnattendance at birth. Its effectiveness depends on the quality of care provided to the pregnantrnwoman. Hence, assessment of the quality of antenatal care in selected hospitals in Addis Ababarnis prudent.rnObjectivesrnThe main objective of this study was to assess the quality of ANC at selected hospitals in AddisrnAbaba.rnMethodsrnA cross sectional descriptive study was conducted on assessment of quality of ANC at TASH,rnGMH, ZMH between June and July 2014. Quality of care was measured as a proportion ofrnpatients receiving recommended components of care. A total of 422 pregnant women during thernstudy period were interviewed through exit interview. Observation of health care providers wasrnperformed during 290 consultations. Clinical record of the clients was also reviewed for datarncompleteness.rnResultrnNinety percent of the study subjects were satisfied with the antenatal care they were rendered.rnEighteen percent of pregnant ladies were dissatisfied with waiting time to complete ANC. Morernthan 90 percent have got general examination, 10.7 percent of mothers did not get hemoglobinrnmeasurement and other routine laboratory investigations. Around 10 percent did not get ironrnsupplementation and TT vaccine. Only 52.1 percent of clients received information on dangerrnsigns of pregnancy. A third of the clients were informed about nutrition, family planning or delivery place. ConclusionrnOverall satisfaction of antenatal care clients in the study facilities was high although a significantrnnumber of clients did not get the required component of ANC. Quality of ANC in the studyrnhospitals was not optimal.rnRecommendationrnRegular performance of quality of antenatal care and implementing clients suggested points onrnimprovement and in service training of health care provider working in ANC clinic is essential.
