The focus of this thesis is reconstructing the administrative and socio-economic history ofrnAsossa wäräda from 1941-1991. The study covers the period from the restoration ofrnEmperor Haile Selassie I to power in 1941 till the downfall of the military government inrn1991, in which the people of Asossa wäräda, similar to other rural populations of BélaŚangul, rnexperienced significant political and socio-economic developments.rnThe thesis deals with the role of strategic location and natural resources of the wärädarnin attracting foreign powers. Local traditions, cultural setup and the conflict of the localrnchiefs to get control over political power and properties are studied. Tremendous efforts, rnon the other hand, have been made to assess the decline and complete termination ofrnlocal self-administrative system during the imperial and the military regimesrnrespectively.rnIn fact, the indigenous Bärta rulers were appointed to rule over their people at differentrnpolitical units during the imperial period. However, the central government did not allowrnthe people to select their immediate governors except in some cases. The study, rnmoreover, deals with the complete rejection of the self-government and administration inrnthe area and its subsequent political contests in the wäräda.rnMoreover, the thesis deals with the massive social interaction between the indigenousrnpeople and the highland peasantry after the 1974 Ethiopian revolution and the sociocultural, rneconomic and environmental changes that followed it. Comparisons are alsornmade on to what extent the socialist ideology was practiced on the indigenous and thernnewly arrived highland villagers
