The Integrated Housing Development Program (IHDP) has introduced by the Ethiopian government in 2005. The main objective of this project was to solve the housing shortage in Addis Ababa. This new approach is different from earlier housing interventions in the city in terms of its settlement pattern, high density and compactness, new multi-story housing typologies and intentional inclusion of commercial functions in design and implementation. As a result, this housing approach has faced many new and undiscovered challenges on residents’ quality of life which needs to be resolved.rnThis thesis explores the effect of one of the characters of this new approach, intentional inclusion of commercial activities, on crime. The main objective of this research is to study the effect of commercial activities mixed in condominium neighborhoods on crime. Research questions are designed to find out how and to what extent the commercial activities affect the dwellers’ crime vulnerability and experiences in the neighborhood. To perform the study a qualitative and quantitative data was collected through an in-depth interview with stratified randomly selected households. A supplemental data was also collected from different sources. Additionally, coping mechanism by different stakeholders towards the prevention of crime in the neighborhood were also assessed. Moreover, secondary data sources were also used.rnThe study shows that, dwellers of the case study area are subjected to a high level of sense of insecurity and crime vulnerability in their neighborhood due to the commercial activities mixed in the neighborhood. But, the actual crime in the neighborhood is lower than their fear of vulnerability and perceived crime experience. This study discovered that the level of dwellers sense of insecurity, crime vulnerability and experience in the study area is highly affected by the spatial and physical characteristics of the commercial activities mixed. Thus, dwellers of the study area take different mechanisms to prevent it. The effectiveness of these mechanisms is very limited due luck of integration between different stakeholders in the sector. Therefore, the study recommends a provision of a clear policy and implementation strategy directions in order to solve this problem.
