A survey on the effects of P. juliflora invasion on livelihoods and thernadaptation mechanisms was carried out in Amibara district of Afar NationalrnRegional State, Ethiopia with a general and specific objectives of assessingrnthe effects of the pla nt species invasion on livelihoods of the people andrna nalyse the adaptation mechanisms towa rds the invasion, pre and post P.rnjuliflora invasion livelihood, a ny livelihood diversification, and also thernopportunities and challenges of P. jUliflora. Both primary and secondaryrnsources of da ta's were used. And the da ta's were a na lysed using qualitativerndescription and descriptive statistics. The result shows that, the livelihoodrnof the people in Amibara district were predomina ntly pastora list indicatingrnthat livestock are the main economic and social assets of a house holdsrnbefore the expansion of P. jUliflora but their livestock number has decreasedrnthrough time. One of the maj or reasons for the declining number of theirrnlivestock is the invasion of P. juliflora. And people living in the study area arernforced to diversify their livelihood. Besides the plant has so many benefitsrnincluding socio economic and ecological benefits. Despite those benefits P.rnjUliflora has been a lso found to have cha llenges. Due to this the local peoplernexerted different mechanisms to maximize the benefit and to mitigate thernnegative impacts. Experience elsewhere in the world shows that eradicationrnof P. juliflora is found to be difficult and economically impossible. Howeverrnthere are spaces to r educe its expansion and utilize it, such as P. juliflorarncontrol through utilization, work in partner ship, differentiate the land usernsystem and livelihood diversification.
