Womens Education And Marital Fertility In Urban Ethiopia

Using data from the 1990 NFFS, this study attempts to show the direction and degrrernof association between education and life-time fertility. It also attempts to determinernthe threshold level of education at which marked fertility decline .can occur.rnA total of 1268 currently married women of reproductive ages from urban areas arernincluded in the study. Data quality was first assessed and then various analysisrntechniques were used to show the association between education and life-time fertilityrnand to establish the threshold level of educatiolLrnThe findings show that education negatively affects lifge-time fertility through itsrneffect on other l'ariables. As the level of education increased, number of children everrnborn decline(L The findings also show that age at first marriage, husband-wiferncommunication, current use of contraceptives negatil,ely affect the number ofrnchildren ever born. On the other hand, infant/child death, du!!!;!i!!!Loj breastrnf eeding and desired family size affect the number of children ever born positively.rnThe threshold level of education where a modest (10 %) change in fertiliy occuredrnwas at educational level 1-4 and a substantial (20 %) decline infertility reductionrnoccured at 5-8 level of educatiolLrnThe study concludes by summarizing the research findings and sugests the need forrnintensijing the effort to educate women
