Now days , to uris m development is beco ming a priority area of the general developmentrnendeavors in Go ndar city. Th is study aimed at looking into the challenges andrnopportunities of to urism development in Go ndar city and pointing out its futu rernperspectives . Primary and secondary qualitative and quantitative data sourced fromrnpurposively, conveniently, and through snowball selected different concerned individualsrnand agenCies through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions , survey,rnobservation, and document analysis were gathered to achieve the stated objectives.rnFrequency and percentage presented by using tables and charts were used to analysisrnquantitative data whereas qualitative data were narrat ed to triangulate and substantiaternthe findings. The study revealed that tourism development has been practiced in the areasrnof tourism product development; micro-and small scale tourism business enterprises;rnhuman resources development; conservation and protectiun of heritages; and marketingrnand promotional a ctivities. Tourism dev elopment was also being challenged by thernlimited participation of residents; the destructions of both tangible and intangiblernheritages; concentration of benefits to few individuals; high leakages of tourism revenue;rnabsence and misplacements of human power in both the private and public sectors;rnabsence of quality and standardized tourism products and services; confiicts of interestsrnand ownerships and absence of cooperation and partnerships among stakeholders;rnnegative altitude of residents towards carnival festival; consumerism b_ehaviors ofrnvisitors; and absence of legal and institutional frameworks. However, the diverse plentyrnof attractions in and around th e city; strategic location of the city; hosp itality andrnpositive attitudes of re sidents towards visitors; prevailing peace and security; and highrnattention by the government and development agencies for tourism development were thernopportunities identified for the· successjiil and sustainable tourism development inrnGondaI' city. Hence, possible ways and strategies to mitigate th e challenges andrnmaximize and utilize th e opportunities to enhance the conh'ibution of tourismrndevelopment are explored and recommended in this study.rnKey words: GOlldar city, Ethiopia, Tourism developmellt, Challellges alld opportullities,rnSustaillability
