Investment is one of the mechanisms by which countries can move to a higher economic,rntechnological and better way of life. More specifically, investment particularly, the private onerncontributes a lot in developing the national market, creating wide employment opportunities forrnthe nation, maximizing the i'?flow offoreign capital, accelerating t~e transfer and adoption ofrnneeded foreign technology and know-how, saving and generating foreign exchange throughrnimport substitution, production or export promotion strategies and in bringing a strongrnintersectorallinks.rnDue to these advantages countries place increasing emphasis to attract private investors to makernthem involved in their economy. Infacilitating this, particularly to attract foreign investors hostrncountries promote the investment opportunities and their resource potential by providingrnaccurate, relevant and timely information.rnAs one of these host countries, Ethiopia is encouraging the private sector participation in allrnspheres of economic activities. Particularly, to attract foreign investors, the government hasrnsetup the Ethiopian Investment Authority (EJA) to_ promote, co-ordinate, and follow-up andrn'!!-onitor investment proposals. Though the government, in order to increase the participation ofrnprivate investors, has created favorable conditions in terms of investment policies, procedures,rnincentives, guarantees and others, the number of projects and the initial investment capital is stillrnnot as much as expected. The number offoreign investment projects that started operations arerninSignificant, which is less than two percent of the total.rnIn this study, the information needs of investors, the role of investment information promotion tornincrease the inflow of foreign capital, investment information promotion planning process,rnstrategies of investment information promotional programs and the role of informationrntechnology for investment information promotion have been discussed. The study has alsornassessed the information needs of invest!!rs, the existing investment promotional mechanismsrnused to attract foreign investors and, the problems in promoting the investment information tornforeign investors. Based on the assessment made, the information handling and investment information promotion activity of the EIA is found to be inadequate. The study has alsornconcluded that this inadequate service can be taken as a constraint for the inflow of foreignrninvestment. In order to alleviate the problems sited, the study has recommended measures thatrnmust be taken by the EIA. It also demonstrates how to promote investment information on thernWorld Wide Web by developing the Web site of the Ethiopian Investment Authority.
