The key problems in providing communication services in developingrncountries like Ethiopia have been identified as using standardrntelecommunications network designed for high capacity and denselyrnpopulated areas. The core network of this standardrntelecommunications is not a problem, the problem is in access networkrnwhich contribute the 50% investment to the overall network, and thisrnneeds flexible technology. As a result of this the cost ofrntelecommunication provision has tended to be at high cost comparedrnto that of the actual income of the citizen.rnIn order to enhance the interconnectivity to our citizen, we need tornintegrate technologies and favor those which can reach end usersrndirectly. The power line network has been realized to have enoughrncapacity and suitable for voice and data communication to supportrncommunications services in lowly populated areas where the electricalrnpower line infrastructure already exists.rnThe objectives of the thesis, therefore, were to: I) explore a model(s) onrnhow to integrate power line and telecommunications technology for arncost effective communication infrastructure; and II) assess integrationrnmodel to end users that provide broadband services with affordablernprice. Accordingly, a cost model was built to provide residential datarntransmission over power line with the necessary and sufficientrnassumptions and cost elements inculcated in the model. The paper willrndiscuss the trends in the provision of telecommunications services andrnalso the use of power line network setup for communication and otherrnservices which has been identified to be provided to end users will berndiscussed.
