It is being recognized in an increasing measure thatrnfor faster pace of socio-economic development , it is notrnonly necessary to promote scientific and technological ~rnresearch and development but also to disseminaterninformation about the findings and products at a fasterrnpace targeted at their potential users. Further, it isrnalso being recognized by many developing countries thatrna National Development Plan should include strategies forrndeveloping a national infrastructure for developmentrninformation.rnThis study proposes a plan for establishing arnnational agricultural information system for Sudan and arnstrategy for its implementation. Questionnaires were sentrnto different agricultural institutions/organizations,rnresearch stations/centers in livestock, fisheries,rnfore s try, environment and natural resources, etc. inrnSudan to survey the status of agricultural informationrnfaci1ities, and to researchers in agriculture and relatedrnsciences to survey their information needs. Based on thernfindings of the survey, Sudan's existing infrastructurernin relation to agricultural education , research,rnextension services, organizations and institutions,rndocumentation and information services and transportationrnand communication is discussed. Constraints andrnlimitations in relation to agricultural research,rnextension services and information service facilities arerndiscussed.rnThe planning, designing and development of thernnational agricultural information system, must take intornaccount the elements of the environment, namely Sudan.rnFurther , the information system plan should be compatiblernwith and eventually integrated into the national socioeconomicrnplan. Therefore, information about andrndescription of the country, especially its geographicrnlocation , climate and vegetation, population, planningrnand development, and economic situation is presented.rnNationa1 agricultural information system andrnnetwork, their objectives, functions and activities arerndiscussed. A plan for establishing a nationalrnagricultural information system and its implementationrnstrategy is formulated. The development of nationalrnagricultural information network with the NationalrnDocumentation and Information Centre (NADIC) as a focalrnpoint is suggested. Development of databases containingrnsample records on information sources and systems,rnexperts , institutions , etc . relating to agriculture isrnsuggested to facilitate referral service on agriculture.rnProposed vocabulary control tools by using computer isrnsuggested. Finally, a summary, conclusion andrnrecommendations are presented.
